Santa Clara, Calif., — LYT’s CEO explores how data will fundamatenlly change and shape the future of transportation

While America’s transportation infrastructure continues to be one of the country’s greatest historical accomplishments, as well as the lifeblood of the American economy, the system itself has continued to have serious challenges during the last two decades.

This is mainly due to the rise in traffic congestion which has ensnarled hundreds of cities across the country. Even in suburban areas, traffic congestion is a rising issue, especially when more delivery trucks are competing for road and kerb space, delivering our online shopping orders. What’s more, competing modes of transportation are also tying up traffic patterns.

Buenos Aires, AR — LYT’s first responder survey reveals that current Emergency Vehicle Preemption Technology does not fully meet the needs of first responders

LYT commissioned an online survey in April in front of more than 2,500 first responders across the country to take their pulse of the performance of existing vehicle preemption technologies, as well as the impact heavier traffic patterns today are having on their response times.

Emergency response times have slowed for a variety of reasons. Approximately 73% of respondents said they are operating at either the same response time, a slightly slower or even a much slower response time in comparison to the last two years. Thirty-two percent said there is more traffic congestion on the roads today, and 26% said there are more drivers unresponsive to emergency vehicles today.

Following Emergency Vehicles & Why it’s So Important to Yield to Them

When you’re driving and see an emergency vehicle approaching with its sirens blaring, it’s essential to pull over to the side of the road as soon as possible.

Did you know that failing to yield can result in a ticket and can put first responders in danger? In this blog post, we’ll discuss why yielding to emergency vehicles is so important.

Stay safe on the roads!

What are the different types of emergency vehicles, and what do they do?

Fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars are all examples of emergency vehicles. These vehicles respond to emergencies such as fires, accidents, and crimes.

When an emergency vehicle approaches, yielding the right-of-way to them is essential. This means that you should pull over to the side of the road and stop.

Position parallel and closest to the curb, with your wheels turned to the right. This will help ensure the emergency vehicle can pass quickly and safely. You should also yield to the emergency vehicle if you are in an intersection.

In most states, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle is against the law. Depending on the state, you may be given a ticket or be required to pay a fine if you fail to yield.

Not only is this dangerous for emergency vehicle drivers, but it can also cause traffic delays for other motorists.

Why is it important to yield to emergency vehicles when you see them on the side of the road?

When you see an emergency vehicle stopped on the side of the road, it is crucial to slow down and proceed with caution.

This is because first responders may be working on or near the roadway. If you are driving too fast, you may not be able to stop in time if something suddenly happens.

Not only is it essential to yield and proceed cautiously when approaching an emergency vehicle, but you should also move over if possible.

In many states, a “Move Over” law requires motorists to change lanes away from the stopped emergency vehicle. This gives first responders and emergency workers more space to work and keeps them safe.

What is a Move Over law?

The Move Over Law requires drivers to change lanes and slow down when approaching an authorized emergency vehicle parked or otherwise stopped on the road.
However, state laws differ significantly in specific provisions defining what actions are obligated of you as a motorist during this time. Therefore, each state has its own set of guidelines.

What is the purpose of the Move Over Law?

Acting as an extension to pre-existing laws, the Move Over law was enacted to improve safety for emergency personnel and motorists alike.

This is why it’s so important to know your state laws and the proper procedures to follow when you see or hear an emergency vehicle approaching. Below are the states that do not practice the Move Over law:

• Nebraska
• Maryland
• New Jersey
• Massachusetts
• Rhode Island
• Connecticut

Laws and procedures regarding emergency vehicles can vary from state to state, so it’s always best to educate yourself on the rules of the road before getting behind the wheel.

What should you do if you’re driving and an authorized emergency vehicle approaches from behind you?

When you’re driving and see or hear emergency vehicles approaching, knowing what to do is essential. Yielding the right-of-of-way is imperative, as is proceeding with caution. By doing so, you can help ensure the safety of those who are responding to an emergency. In addition, safety and traffic conditions can change quickly, so it’s essential to stay alert and be prepared to take action.

To assist drivers in understanding what they should do in this scenario, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a set of procedures under the acronym SIREN, which stands for:

1. Stay Alert – Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Pay attention to the road and be on the lookout for emergency vehicles. When in front of a moving emergency vehicle, keep your distance and be aware that it may need to stop suddenly, so watch the brake lights.
A stopped emergency vehicle may have its emergency lights on and may also be using a siren. In addition, a police officer or emergency personnel may be outside the vehicle directing traffic.

2. Investigate – Once you see or hear an emergency vehicle, determine if it is safe to pull over. If so, do so as soon as possible. Check your mirrors and blind spots before moving over.

3. React – Follow the proper procedures for yielding to an emergency vehicle. First, move to the right of way as soon as it is safe. Then, yield the right-of-way to the emergency vehicle.
Motor vehicles should only follow closely behind an emergency vehicle if authorized to do so or have official business with the emergency vehicle.

4. Enter – Once you have yielded the right-of-way, enter the right lane and follow all traffic laws. Make sure it’s clear and safe before entering the right lane. Proceed with caution after the emergency vehicle has passed.

5. Never try to outrun, follow, or race an emergency vehicle. Instead, pull over and wait for the emergency vehicle to pass. If you can’t pull over safely, keep going to a location with enough room.

By following these simple steps, you can help ensure the safety of everyone on the road. So the next time you see or hear an emergency vehicle, remember to stay alert, investigate, react, enter, and never try to outrun it.

What are the consequences of failing to yield to an emergency vehicle?

Failing to yield to an emergency vehicle can have many consequences. These are just a few:

It can cause delays in the response time of the emergency vehicle. Every second counts when someone requires medical attention; even a few seconds’ delay can make a difference in the outcome.

Failing to yield can lead to accidents. Emergency vehicles often travel at high speeds; if another car gets in their way, the results can be devastating.

Failing to yield to an emergency vehicle is also a criminal offense in some states, so motorists could face fines or jail time.

Motorists should always be aware of their surroundings and yield to emergency vehicles when appropriate to help ensure the safety of everyone on the road.

Final Thoughts

When you see or hear emergency vehicles approaching, please pull to the side of the road and stop. It may seem like an inconvenience, but it’s not – it could mean the difference between life and death.

By yielding to emergency vehicles, you are helping them reach their destination as quickly as possible so they can help those who need it most.

Here’s How Silent Alarms are Making Public Transit & Pedestrian Travel Safer

Silent Alarms are Making Public Transit & Pedestrian Travel Safer – Here is How:

Ever heard of a silent vehicle alarm or a “Silent Alarm?”

Remember the old spy movies where they had the person blink twice for yes or blink once for no? Ok, so maybe you do or don’t – regardless, silent communication is not reserved just for Hollywood.

Silent alarms have long been utilized, but now they are assisting in making public transit, ride-sharing, and pedestrian travel safer. In addition, as smart cities move to adopt safety protocols for their citizens and workers, they are using technology to help.

Today, we will share how it is all coming together!

How Silent Vehicle Alarms are Making Public Travel Safer

Imagine a situation where a bus driver, public transit rider, or taxi cab driver/rider doesn’t feel safe. The options are usually limited, especially if there is a rare but possible immediate threat of danger.

Sometimes, calling 911 on a smartphone isn’t readily available, or someone feels uncomfortable doing so. This can go to a rider or the driver.

Issues with public bus transportation safety already exist due to the poor communication of safety rules for passengers, ineffective signage, driver distraction, and unruly passengers.

On some occasions, there may be instances of the extreme threat of or actual violence (think of arguments, fights, or possible theft like purse snatching or pickpocketing) that leave passengers and drivers feeling unsafe. During instances like this, the solution is often a silent communication method which more cities and cab companies are moving towards.

With integrated passenger information systems and silent alarm buttons, passengers have the comfort of knowing they can ride safer, and drivers know they, too, can focus on the road instead of playing bus patrol.

What is a silent alarm system & how does it work:

A silent alarm system is precisely what you might think it is – a silent alert to authorities that do not notify the intruder or perpetrator, just the first responders/police.

Retail stores, schools, and commercial buildings frequently will have silent alarms that make no audible noise to alert intruders but notify authorities and dispatch. Using a similar approach, cities are outfitting public buses with similar technology.

Panic buttons and rider information systems are conveniently installed on many buses that can alert authorities while promoting safety for drivers and riders. Taxicab companies also include similar technology, and some provide drivers with a panic button in the event of a robbery.

If you see a taxicab with the status ‘HELP,’ it can be a silent signal to notify authorities that the driver needs help. This protects the driver, and there are similar options for passengers.

At LYT, we use artificial technology and cloud-based software to assist transit authorities and emergency response personnel with their travel.

Related: Emergency Response Times & Insurance – How They Correlate

What about pedestrian travel?

Safety protocols were enacted on many large college campuses in the 2000s to prevent attacks and robberies. One mechanism was the installation of alarm systems around campuses, similar to what you might find at a crosswalk.

Students can hit a button that signals an emergency to authorities and bring attention to the area with flashing lights. Emergency poles – as they are often referred to – can be found in larger metropolitan areas and on college campuses to help protect pedestrian travelers.

Personal safety apps and devices exist, as well – all to promote safer travel for all.

With one common goal in mind, many cities see the future of safety as closely intertwined with transportation and technology!

Lyt’s smart traffic solution is to move emergency vehicles and first responders through intersections faster along the Fremont Boulevard Safe and Smart Corridor project in California.

According to Lyt, the emergency vehicle preemption (EVP) solution produces a consistent and reliable green light for every emergency vehicle more affordably than other products on the market. These solutions harness the power of a single secure edge device installed in traffic management centres that enable emergency vehicles to speak directly to networked traffic signals in cities through the Lyt cloud platform, the company adds.

7 Reasons Why Software Companies Benefit from Penetration Testing

In today’s digital age, software plays a fundamental role in virtually every industry, from healthcare to transportation. With the increasing reliance on software, the need for robust security measures has never been more pressing. In a recent IBM study, ransomware attacks, which make up almost 25% of all breaches in 2023, have an average cost of $4.45 million. In that same study, it was found that only 1 in 3 organizations discovered a data breach through their own security teams, which signals the need for improved threat detection. This is where penetration testing comes into play. For software providers, the importance of penetration testing cannot be overstated. In this blog, we will explore the critical role of penetration testing in ensuring the security and reliability of software.

What is Penetration Testing?

Penetration testing, often referred to as “pen testing,” is a proactive approach to cybersecurity. It involves simulating real-world cyberattacks on software systems to identify vulnerabilities that malicious actors could exploit. These tests are conducted by skilled professionals who use a combination of automated tools and manual techniques to uncover weaknesses in the software’s security. Increasingly, this kind of testing is being offered through SaaS-based platforms; one leading autonomous provider, Horizon3.ai, has created a solution that helps organizations find, fix, and verify weaknesses with their NodeZero Platform.

The Importance of Penetration Testing for Software Providers

Identifying Vulnerabilities

Penetration testing is a proactive measure to identify vulnerabilities in software before cybercriminals have a chance to exploit them. With the ever-evolving threat landscape, software providers need to stay one step ahead by addressing potential security risks. Penetration testing helps uncover hidden vulnerabilities and weaknesses that might otherwise go unnoticed, such as code flaws, misconfigurations, and security gaps.

Real-World Testing

Penetration tests emulate real-world cyberattacks, providing software providers with valuable insights into how their software systems would perform under attack. This “ethical hacking” approach allows organizations to understand their security posture better and develop appropriate countermeasures.

Compliance and Regulations

Many industries are subject to strict security regulations and compliance requirements. Penetration testing is often a necessary step to demonstrate compliance with these standards. For software providers dealing with sensitive data or in highly regulated sectors like healthcare or finance, regular penetration testing is a must to avoid hefty fines and maintain the trust of customers and partners.

Protecting Reputation

A data breach can have severe consequences, including damage to a software provider’s reputation. Customers and stakeholders expect their data to be handled securely. By proactively identifying and addressing vulnerabilities through penetration testing, software providers can show their commitment to security, build trust, and safeguard their reputation.

Cost Savings

It’s a well-known fact that addressing security issues early in the development process is far less expensive than dealing with a data breach later on. Penetration testing allows software providers to identify and resolve vulnerabilities during the development phase, reducing the financial impact of potential security incidents.

Continuous Improvement

Cyber threats are continually evolving, and security is an ongoing process. Regular penetration testing ensures that a software provider’s security measures stay up to date and effective. It also encourages a culture of continuous improvement in terms of cybersecurity. At LYT, we have partnered with Horizon3.ai to conduct penetration tests at least once every quarter to make sure we are on top of the latest cybersecurity threats.

Third-Party Assessments

For software providers working with third-party vendors or offering integration with other systems, penetration testing can be a critical part of the due diligence process. It helps ensure that the software can withstand potential attacks and provides assurance to customers and partners that their data is secure.

Conclusion

In a world where cyber threats are constantly evolving, the importance of penetration testing for software providers cannot be underestimated. It is a proactive, cost-effective, and essential step in safeguarding software systems and protecting customer data. By identifying vulnerabilities, complying with regulations, protecting their reputation, and maintaining continuous improvement in cybersecurity, software providers can build trust and resilience in an ever-changing digital landscape. Embracing penetration testing is not just a best practice; it’s a necessity in today’s software-driven world. At LYT, cities and agencies can rest assured knowing that their traffic data is kept safe and secure from malicious cyberattacks.

Building shorter headway schedules is one way that transit agencies can encourage higher bus ridership. Transit Signal Priority solutions, such as LYT.transit, can keep those buses running on time. Check out how shorter headways helped to reshape Dallas’ bus network.

LYT Achieves SOC 2 Type 1 Compliance: A Commitment to Security and Trust

At LYT, we understand that security is paramount in today’s digital landscape, especially when it comes to smart cities and intelligent transportation systems. That’s why we are thrilled to announce that LYT has successfully been issued a SOC 2 Type 1 report. This significant milestone reinforces our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of data security, privacy, and operational integrity.

What is SOC 2 Type 1 Compliance?

SOC 2 or Service Organization Controls 2 is a framework that is governed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). With a SOC 2 audit, an independent service auditor will review an organization’s policies, procedures, and evidence to determine if their controls are designed and operating effectively. A SOC 2 report communicates a company’s commitment to data security and protection of customer information. This achievement validates that LYT’s systems are designed with robust security measures to protect sensitive information.

Why SOC 2 Compliance Matters

As a leader in smart city technology, LYT’s solutions optimize traffic flow and improve urban mobility through intelligent transportation optimization. Our platform handles large amounts of data and interacts with critical transportation infrastructure, making security a critical component of our operations. Earning a SOC 2 Type 1 report is a testament to the reliability and trustworthiness of our platform, ensuring that our clients can rely on us to safeguard their data.

Security as a Core Value

At LYT, we believe that innovation and security must go hand-in-hand. Our mission is to build intelligent transportation solutions that not only improve efficiency but also maintain the trust of our partners and users. This report demonstrates our dedication to continuous improvement in securing our systems and ensuring that cities can adopt our technology with confidence.

Stay tuned as we continue our journey towards a SOC 2 Type 2 report, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to the highest levels of operational security and transparency.

LYT’s EVP Platform Now Integrates With Haas Alert, Helping Improve Response Times

Santa Clara, Calif., — LYT Announces new integration with Haas Alert for EVP

LYT’s EVP solution produces a consistent and reliable green light for every emergency vehicle more affordably than other products on the market. These solutions harness the power of a single secure edge device installed in Traffic Management Centers that enable emergency vehicles to speak directly to networked traffic signals in cities through the LYT cloud platform.

HAAS Alert’s Safety Cloud collision prevention solution delivers real-time notifications from active emergency vehicles to nearby motorists over cellular networks. Safety Cloud alerts are received by motorists and connected vehicles via in-vehicle systems such as uConnect (Jeep, Dodge, Ram, and Chrysler vehicles) and navigation applications such as Waze, giving drivers clear advance warning and more time to safely slow down and clear roadways.
