Elk Grove Fire Department Achieves 154% Faster Response with Cloud-Based Preemption.
The City of Elk Grove, California, is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state, with a population approaching 180,000 residents. As the community expanded, so did traffic congestion, creating increasing challenges for the Cosumnes Fire Department, which responded to over 24,000 incidents in 2024. With average response times exceeding national standards, the department needed a modern solution to navigate heavy traffic safely and efficiently.
For years, emergency responders relied on legacy hardware-based preemption systems that required line-of-sight communication and offered limited visibility into system performance. These outdated systems frequently failed to provide the green lights emergency vehicles needed, forcing crews to navigate dangerous intersections on red lights.
In partnership with the City of Elk Grove, the Cosumnes Fire Department piloted LYT’s connected vehicle platform for Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP). The deployment spanned 43 intersections along two of the city’s busiest corridors: Elk Grove Boulevard and Laguna Boulevard.
